“Furnas do Enxofre” is the most important fumarolic field on Terceira island, discharging water steam and volcanic gases from a complex underground system. The gas phase is essentially CO2 (~98%) and near the fumaroles ground temperatures up to 95-98ºC are measured and sulphur deposits are common.
