Azores Geopark

Azores Geopark

9 islands, 1 geopark

Farelhão

The Azores Geopark, created in 2010, was recognized as an European Geopark in 2013 and as an UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. It allies a geoconservation strategy with environmental awareness and education policies, and with the promotion of a sustainable socioeconomic development, based on geotourism.

It is supported on a network of 121 geosites dispersed by the 9 Azorean islands and the surrounding marine area, which guarantee the representativity of the Azorean geodiversity and translate its geologic and eruptive history.

In addition to the geological heritage, there are other reference values in the Region, such as a rich biodiversity and architectural, cultural, ethnographic and immaterial heritage of undeniable value. It includes in its territory 2 World Heritage Sites, 4 Biosphere Reserves and 14 Ramsar Sites.

Partners

The Azores Geopark has several partnerships with public and private entities from the 9 islands, with relevant working domains for the geopark. The established partnerships have a converging view regarding the promotion and enhancement of natural heritage in general and the geological heritage in particular, promoting sustainable development of the territory. The Azores Geopark is available to establish new partnerships through the sharing of knowledge and resources, uniting synergies for the development of the territory.

Leiqiong UNESCO Global Geopark

Leiqiong Geopark is located on the southern bank of the Chinese mainland, which lies in the Qiongzhou Strait. The geology is characterized by the Leiqiong Rift Volcanic Belt and contains records of the origin of the Leiqiong Rift and the spread of the South China Sea Basin. This UNESCO Global Geopark is also positioned in an ecological transition area characterized by a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Here, volcanic land forms provide the red fertilized land for the green rainforests beside the blue sea and silver beach.
